Comic Wednesday

I'm having a crazy few days here and I can't write much beyond noting that, in Michigan's primary, Ron Paul beat up Rudy and Fred:

54,434
6%
0
32,135
4%
0
24,706
3%
0
That's Ron over Rudy by more than two to one. You'd think that if Republicans were really excited about a candidate, the votes would show it, even a little.

On the comic front, DC's almost reached another crisis and the XMen: Messiah Complex wrap up to House of M is really good reading. I hope this Xmen event wraps up intelligibly. I'm skeptical given the endings of Marvel's last few universe altering messes.

What I'm really waiting for is Strange Girl #6.

Posting At Another Site

I've just written my first contribution to DoorQ, the premier LGBT fantasy/scifi/horror website. It's a great site with a nice layout and loads of content that varies from original fiction to comic book reviews. Give it a browse if you get a chance. I've also added it to my reading list on the sidebar to the right left.

Comic Wednesday

It's Halloween and new comic release day. Not surprisingly, Marvel is taking its sweet time wrapping up World War Hulk (WWH). Issue five doesn't come out until November 14th. I'm pretty close to giving the storyline a big yawn. Civil War ended with a messy splat; if issue four is any indicator, WWH will follow suit and end in green goo.

Back in the real world, it turns out the we (Americans) are a bloodthirsty bunch. I'd love to know how Iran, as described in this graphic, is more of a threat to our mcMansion lifestyle than predatory lenders.

Oh, and here's a puppy:

Dog Therapy For A Slow Comic Day

It's comic Wednesday. I don't see anything too exciting that's out in the mainstream books this week. I'm not going to buy that wretched Frontline. I don't care if it's well drawn and World War Hulk related. It's unreadable.

To keep me from being grouchy over the lack of exciting new comics this week, I'll do two things. First, I'll look for some cool indy titles tonight. Second, I'll post some more links to pictures of cute dogs (with some other animals thrown in for good measure). Link 1. Link 2.

Comic Wednesday

It's new comic day. I'll trek down to Midtown Comics later and sift through the new offerings. World War Hulk has been less than stellar. After the end of Civil War, I wasn't really expecting much anyway.

DC's Countdown is a good weekly, not quite as good as 52, but pretty darn good. Countdown to Mystery No. 1 was also good last week. It's got a great twist on Kent Nelson, or maybe a new Kent, as Dr. Fate. Maybe the helmet has a good home again. Maybe it will get its own universe again too, but I doubt that one. Just please don't turn it into a knife again. That was really dumb.

Oh, and it's way to hot here for the end of September. It's almost 90F. Ugh. I can't wait for the cold weather.

Also, here is a good page on introductory statistics. It covers the basics like mean and median.

New Gay SciFi Site

The Boston Edge has a nice writeup on a soon to be website for gay geeks. DoorQ.com will open its web-doors this Halloween. The site is promising a gay take, or gay information, or something, on all things horror, scifi, anime, comic, and I hope gaming, related. There's also mention of profiles and forums. I will definitely be posting about gay characters in mainstream comics, if their system supports such activity.

Oh, and DoorQ folks, if you ever need a science consultant, this gay geek is happily available. :)

Comic Wednesday

It's Wednesday and new book release day. I'll be walking to midtown to pick up this week's new offerings. Marvel hasn't put out any significant World War Hulk (WWH) books in weeks, although the arc with Amadeus Cho was cute. They should do so soon. Where is Thor, since he's alive again? Where is The Sentry?

Some of Hulk's battles have been particularly disappointing and out of line with his abilities. A magical ability to mentally fend of Emma Frost and Xavier? Please. The final fight with The Juggernaut was good though.

I'm liking Endangered Species more than WWH. And Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men is a tawdry affair not to be missed.

Hm, I didn't intend to be so Marvel focused, but there you have it.

Also, and quite unrelated, sometimes I find things on the Internets that I just don't have proper words for (not that I often have proper words).

In Case You Need To Know

I found a site detailing evidence for the religious affiliations of many, many comic book characters. It's an interesting, if not well formatted, site with supporting evidence contained in the links to the right of the characters' names. Who knew Mystique was an atheist? Or the Hulk a Catholic?

Also, I'm guessing it's out of a desire to have as much information as possible at their site, but LGBT is NOT a religion (and neither is atheism for that matter).

Budgeting Batman

"Middle class Batman," by Mike Mitchell(click for larger). I like this. This is a Batman I'd read (well, read more than I do). DC's Bruce Wayne is a rich, angry, straight, white-guy; I've never been a huge fan. He follows Superman's impossibly good paradigm but in a dark way. What is that anyway? What does he have to be so angry about? Anyway, there's more interesting artwork at the link.

I found this via another site I StumbledUpon (not going to link it). At that site, people were arguing over the picture, swearing about banner ads, behaving like Trekkies by hypothesizing what weapons and gear a middle class Batman might carry (this is the most forgivable in this geeks opinion), and
screaming censorship for comments that vanished during a server change.

While, I'm on the comments censorship thing... Anyone remember The Lawnmower Man? There's a line in it, "I'm god in here."

Oh, and it's Friday :) I have tons of studying and writing to do this weekend, but I hope to get a couple of good runs and workouts in. I've been better about that lately. I haven't blogged about running in a while. Maybe I'll carry my point and shoot camera with me so I can gather some interesting material to run-blog.

God, it's time to end this wandering post!

Comic Wednesday

It's Wednesday already. That means making a trip tonight to a certain comic store in midtown to get new books. DC keeps killing Flashes and bringing them back (even though Bart Allen seems quite dead). And Marvel, hasn't House of M gone on long enough? You dropped it almost completely during your messy Civil War and now you're playing with it in the back pages of X books. Wrap it up already.

Also, I stumbled across this list of infrequently used, but apparently important, words. Some people would label usage an indicator of importance and erudition an indicator of self-importance. ;-p

Comic Wednesday

It's comic release day. The final issue of DC's 52 weekly is out today. It has been an interesting read.

I'm busy as usual here, so posting will be slow for the next few days, but here are some interesting sites I've found recently:

Comic Wednesday

It's Wednesday, the day new comics get released. Lately, that also means rain during my walk to the Grand Central area. That's ok though; I'm a NY'er with many umbrellas.

Extremely busy in the lab this week. That means comic day might not happen for me until Thursday or Friday. Also, light posting to follow.

Cold and Windy Comic Night

I'm feeling a little better tonight. So I took my Wednesday night comic walk to Grand Central. Books that look good this week:

  • Stephen King's: The Dark Tower #3
  • JLA #7
  • 52: Week 48
Last month's Strange Girl #15 was great as usual. I finally got around to reading that last night.

Civil Whatever

So, after blowing the ending of its Civil War, Marvel now kills Steve Rogers. I smell the Frank Castle, The Punisher, taking up the Captain America gauntlet. That should cement Marvel's position that only loonies and the tragically flawed would stand up against an unjust law or an economically/politically ordained philosopher king/daddy figure.

One request Marvel, can you complete the Civil War trainwreck and take out Iron Man too? You know, just to be fair.
