ROSWELL, N. M. (KRQE-KBIM) - A mentally ill man being taken into police custody died after Roswell officers jolted him with a Taser and applied other non-lethal force, according to officials.
Javier Aguilar was pronounced dead Thursday about 40 minutes after he arrived in handcuffs at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center.
"My officers followed policy procedure to the T," Roswell Police Department Deputy Chief Scott Douglass said. "They were lucky, and they came away with just minor injuries."Yes, that's very lucky, unless you were the person who died following the tasing. What kind of official uses a word like "lucky" to describe any part of an incident that resulted in a dead mentally ill person?
