WhooHoo! A NY court has unanimously ruled that New York should honor Canadian same-sex marriages:
(Rochester, New York) An appeals court has ruled that a gay couple's marriage in Canada should be recognized in New York. The Appellate Division of state Supreme Court on Friday reversed a judge's ruling in 2006 that Monroe Community College did not have to extend health benefits to an employee's lesbian partner.
Of course the state legislature could be whipped into a "marriage sanctity" frenzy:
Anyone want to make a guess about how this will change rhetoric coming from the presidential campaigns? I'm betting on a bunch of nods to "one man, one woman" from both sides of the aisle.
The state legislature ``may decide to prohibit the recognition of same-sex marriages solemnized abroad,'' the ruling said. ``Until it does so, however, such marriages are entitled to recognition in New York.''Still, this is aboot the coolest news I've heard lately.
