Comics
Wildstorm has a new comic out "The Boys." It's advertised as a story about a band of antiheroes working unofficially for the government dispatching out of control superheroes. Forget that some version of this story is happening in every major comic universe. Forget that the art looks like Dr. Fate of the mid-80's (which I love for what is was at the time). This is just a waste of time.

It's a typical straight guy's mental masturbation session. There's a tough gritty group of men emasculating weaker men and having sex with women who hate them but just can't resist themselves. At least Guy Richie is a stylized kind of testosterone addled fantasy. The Boy's is just tired wannabe macho cliche after cliche.

On the other hand, Vertigo has a decent new release this week called "Deadman." It's an existential look at life and death through a dead-or-not-dead protagonist. Life and afterlife are twisted until an interesting new character is born at the end. It's a pretty entertaining read, drawn and colored very appropriately to the story, and definitely a worthwhile number one to have.
